Elise Ackerman On The Interplanetary Internet
In the latest issue of the IEEE Spectrum, Elise Ackerman has an article on the “delay-tolerant network” that will “weave a different kind of web in space.” The idea is similar to the world wide web in that there are multiple nodes sharing the communication load, but different in that data must be kept until receipt is acknowledged, instead of discarded and resent from the source. Also, the entire network “must be robust enough to withstand delays, disruptions and disconnections in space,” not to mention the changing positions of celestial phenomena and the systems monitoring them. Tall order!
