Weekend Project: Ubergeeke’s Computer Repair Kit
Over the years, I’ve collected a small ton of tools - both hardware and software - to use when I repair computers. Since I’m the geeky person some of my friends call when they have computer problems, I tend to keep my eye out for new tools all the time. If I see something interesting, I download it or buy it and add it to the stack of tools I have already.
Well, now I’ve got the messiest workbench in East Portland, and can’t find a damned thing. (Somewhere in that stack is my Diablo II: Lord of Destruction CD, I just know it.) I even have *two* workspaces. One is completely overrun with tools of the handheld variety as well as a couple of monitors, half a dozen PCI cards, some paint supplies for the ST:Voyager model I haven’t put together (yet!), and an assortment of busted gadgets and screws. The other is neater, but that’s because it’s got my primary workhorse PC on it, and even that desk has two four inch stacks of CDs just sitting there, waiting to be sorted.
This weekend’s project is to condense all the hardware and software that might be helpful in a small PC or Mac repair job and put it all in a nice, shiny silver briefcase. Saturday, I’ll put together a set of hardware tools and share the list here on dotFiveOne. On Sunday, I’ll post about the software tools that I’ll include for diagnostic and repair purposes. I’m killing two birds with one stone: I’ll have a nice shiny kit, ready to go for any reasonable job, *and* I’ll be able to see where the holes are, if any, so I can promptly get the right tools to finish out the kit.
Great stuff! Check back tomorrow for an update on the hardware side of things.

Excellent! Can’t wait to see it. I’ve been working up my own “co-lo tools requirements list.”
