WomenInAmateurRadio: FCC’s Laura Smith

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is a United States government agency that regulates “interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable” across the fifty states (as well as a few other places).

The Enforcement Bureau of the FCC has one major mission: make sure everyone plays nice. Last month, Laura Smith was named as Special Counsel to the Spectrum Enforcement Division. Now, the FCC covers a heck of a lot more than just Amateur Radio, obviously, but we hams do fall into their jurisdiction.

What does that mean? It means if you’re licensed and you break the rules - operating outside of your frequency, transmitting prohibited content, etc. - or you’re *not* licensed and you transmit at all, she’ll lead the legal team that will kick your butt. (Of course, you, all by your lonesome, aren’t a big enough fish to attract her attention, but don’t push your luck.)

For those of you who have thought about getting your Amateur Radio license, drop “ham radio” in the search bar on dotFiveOne and get more information!
