Evelopedia: The Wiki For Eve Onliners

With all the hype about the next updates to Eve Online, I thought the next Big Thing out of CCP would be planet-side missions. Taking the MMORPG to the next level of role playing seemed an obvious choice.

Um, not yet.

Instead, I just found out about the Evelopedia, Eve Online’s new wiki for gamers. The great thing about the wiki is that it combines player-generated content with some vital locked-down CCP-generated information, like the item database. *Very* nice.

What’s good: I didn’t need to create yet another account to access the wiki; my game login works just fine.  User access is extensive, but godlike editing powers are reserved for CCP developers and administrators. This is a Good Thing because I don’t need BoB-ites editing my text, or posting inaccurate info, thank you very much. (And before BoB descends upon me, I was just using you guys as an example. Calm down, overlords.) Also, the "Random Page" option is just cool.

What’s not so good: Currently, English is the only language option. I’m sure this will change pretty quickly as Eve Online has an international user base. Most importantly, though, **where are the maps??**

For folks just getting into the game, this is a great place to check for information. For advanced and experienced players, this is the perfect place to post your wisdom.

As a certified wiki nut, I have to say that’s one good looking wiki. The most popular gaming/fictional universe wikis are on Wikia, and most of the wikis hosted and created by game development companies by themselves are pretty horrific. Comparing Evelopedia to that general standard, it’s spiffy.

I wonder if they wrote their own wiki engine or just heavily modified a software, because that skin is pretty darn nice. It could be MediaWiki, but skinning that is such a pain in the butt they must have some wicked designers.

In general, looks a lot like the kind of site most people are more familiar with, but doesn’t omit very important wiki usability features like Recent Changes, an easily accessible history, etc.
