The IEEE Spectrum’s Take On DIY
More than once - more than twice - I’ve mentioned projects that I’d like to tackle on my own instead of purchasing something pre-assembled. My goal is to learn how things work, but other folks have different reasons, ranging from sustainability to hacker ethics. From the popularity of Make magazine to bestselling DIY books, folks are reclaiming their productivity by building more and buying less.
Enter TechShops, a membership-based workshop with tons of tools that most folks don’t have in their homes, from lathes to large rotary punches, spot welders and laser cutters.
I’m excited that a TechShop is coming to Bridgetown, and can’t wait to join. I’m not the only one. The IEEE Spectrum recently did a photospread on some of the nifty things folks have assembled themselves using TechShop tools, and featured a couple of articles on the DIY boom as well. Check ‘em out, and make sure to give a little feedback to the Spectrum folks. They’re working hard!
