Young Women & Their Robots
Last week, I had the “pleasure” of attending a regulatory tutorial at Octoberbest, the annual Regional High-Tech Conference & Expo for folks in the embedded systems market. Generally, it’s a networking and sales event, with vendors scrambling to net some new customers, but there were two highlights this year.
The first was a memorable presentation by Terry Outcalt, General Manager of FLIR Systems, Inc., who had all kinds of goodies to show everyone in the field of thermal imaging. The other was tucked away in an upstairs corner, but if you happened to catch Outcalt’s presentation - and I did - you couldn’t help but notice something interesting next to the FLIR booth.
Robots!
The award-winning Oregon City Robotics team, specifically Jessica and Emily, were on hand to show folks how to “drive” their robot. Be sure to check out their site to get all the info on who they are, what they do and how they do it. And for you local women, they’re looking for mentors. (Code’n'Sploders: this means us!) Don’t miss the pics on their site.
There’s also some affiliation with FIRST, “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”, a group that tries to get more students some real life experience in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Keen!
Thanks to Jessica and Emily for letting me play a bit, and for signing on as subscribers to dotFiveOne!
