What Women Are Doing In Astronomy: Dr. Pamela Gay

Let me be clear: everything I know about astronomy I learned from “Contact” and “Stargate: SG-1″. Which is to say, not a lot. If I had known how much math was involved, though, I probably would have chosen astronomy instead of electrical engineering as my focus because astronomy is cooler (on the geek scale of coolness, you understand). Luckily, this site allows me to point you folks in the direction of *other* geeks who know a ton about very cool things, and in this case, astronomy.

Dr. Pamela Gay, Professor of Astronomy at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and contributor to “Astronomy Cast”, has more geek points than I can ever hope to attain. She also does a fantastic job of explaining highly technical concepts in every day terms.

Check out her blog, Star Stryder, where you can read about her recent adventures at DragonCon 2008, and then give a listen to Astronomy Cast. I’m partial to episode #100, in which rockets are discussed, but there are over one  hundred episodes posted - a feast for your ears. “Astronomy Cast” has been available in the ether for over two years, which is about a decade in internet time.

If you enjoy it enough to add it to your feed list, drop them a line and let them know!
