“The Guild” Now Available On DVD

This one’s for the avid gamers who read .51, as well as those interested in film-making. I’ll admit that sometimes it takes me awhile to catch up to what all the cool kids are doing. C’est la guerre.

Nearly one year after the first episode first debuted on the web, I finally clicked the right button and watched “The Guild”. I then proceeded to laugh my ass off. This hilarious web series was the brain child of Felicia Day. Day was most recently seen opposite Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion in “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” (recently mentioned here on .51), and spent a season as a potential slayer on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. Evidently, Day was also a mad WoW gamer, and some of the misadventures in “The Guild” are based on her own experiences. (Visit here for a bit more history about “The Guild”.)

I’ve never played “World of Warcraft” - my heart belongs to Eve Online, though I’d happily cheat on my spaceship to play some Diablo III - but I’ve lost loved ones to it just like everyone else. Yet even I must admit that it’s a cool game (ok, I can admit that online, but not out loud), so poking fun at the addiction is pretty damned entertaining. On the other hand, I’m in love with the web series phenomenon. Guerrilla video? Check. Independent film-makers? Check. A great writer and some talented actors? Got ‘em. Geeky subject matter? Awesome. Available for download whenever the hell I want? Perfect. The idea that video content can be created, marketed and still be successful outside of the Hollywood model is viral as of late, and I’m happy to reap the rewards: cool content on my screen. Obviously, I’m not the only one, since ‘net content was one of the sticky points of the writers’ strike earlier this year.

No spoilers will be posted here today, and I’m still watching the first season anyway. Also, as of today, Season 1 of “The Guild” is available on DVD. The vids are available free to watch on the intertubes, so buying the DVD is the best way to kick these folks some cash in appreciation. Since they’re in production for Season 2 (with a release hopefully at the end of September), I bet they’d be grateful.
