Sucked Into Zeraus’ “Daemon”

I’d planned to have some tech content up today, but I’m behind. Why? Because I finally got my hands on “Daemon,” a novel by Leinad Zeraus, and time is currently standing still.

I shouldn’t even mention it yet, because I’m only halfway through the book, but I am seriously sucked in. My chores are stacking up. There’s a lone laptop downstairs waiting for a DesktopBSD installation. I’m supposed to be studying for an EMAG exam. Etc. Well, never you mind all that; instead, order your copy of this book.

To be honest, this book will likely only appeal to folks who (a) have spent time as sysadmins or (b) are MMORPG players. And it isn’t the kindest book to women, either. If it weren’t for the tech, I’d probably give it a miss because I’m not into thrillers.

Yet if you have *ever* spent time in either of those pursuits, you should read this book. I’ve read countless science fiction books that try to explain computers to the reader, and most of them miss the mark. They go for some sort of “Hackers” dreamscape when the computing starts - virtual worlds, etc. Recently, I read Kelly McCullough’s “Webmage” and “Cybermancy”, and while they were fun (very, in fact, and I recommend them), the tech stuff was more fantastic than hacktastic.

“Daemon” gets the tech right. All of it. Now, I’ll probably hype more about it when I’m done, but at least now you know why the programming posts, etc., won’t be up for another day or so.
