Ladytron’s “Velocifero”: For Fans Only
Gotta say, I was really looking forward to this disc.
With much ado, I popped Ladytron’s latest, “Velocifero” into the disc player last Saturday and set out for a night on the town, convinced that I had the perfect soundtrack for such an event. I was somewhat disappointed.
“Velocifero” is techno-bar background noise. Not one song on this disc has the punch of “Destroy Everything You Touch” from “Witching Hour”. There’s no innovation here, just more of the same Euro-tech that I’ve heard countless times before, though not from Ladytron. Listening to this is like listening to something that’s technically perfect but that possesses no spirit. Harsh, I know, but true.
I will say that “Predict The Day” is a standout, but that’s only one track out of thirteen. Bad math.
If you’re a fan, get it, but don’t expect the irresistible catchiness of “Light & Magic”. If you’ve never listened to Ladytron before, I highly recommend one of their first two discs, but perhaps you should give this one a miss.
