“Hulk Smash!” Not As Annoying As You Might Think

A week ago I went to see the new Indiana Jones movie, which was a waste of $7.75 USD, let me tell you. I expected more from Lucas & Spielberg, but apparently, they’d rather beat me over the head with the obvious than entertain me. So be it.

Since I couldn’t stay away from the Summer of Super Heroes, I went into the theater this week fearing the worst. If Indy IV was that bad, how could a second attempt at a Hulk movie fare better? I mean, “they” just decided to throw out the first storyline and start over. Are do-overs even legal when “Hulk”, the first remake attempt, was only released five years ago?

Guess so, and it’s a good thing. “The Incredible Hulk” was fun, with decent drama (which can sometimes be overwhelming in movies with comic book characters), smooth graphics, a (mostly) believable plotline, and actors I could stand (much as I love Sam Elliott, he was over the top in Attempt #1). I could forget all about the first Hulk movie. This one was far better.

There are several nods to the Hulk television series (which I won’t spoil because I’m a Very Nice Person), and at least one comic book reference that made fans laugh out loud. Norton is great as Banner, and believable without being annoying. Some folks might think that he’s playing the angst a bit hard, but let’s face it - Banner’s life is pretty damned angsty. Liv Tyler manages to *not* be the soft and tear-eyed damsel in distress for the whole movie, which was refreshing, and Tim Roth is a pretty good bad guy. And the very last scene in the movie is worth at least half of the price of admission.

If you’re game to blow money on movies, add this one to your list. If you’re saving up for Batman or Hancock, don’t forget to add this to your DVD list for later.
