Eve Online: What To Do After The Tutorial

So you downloaded the client and signed up for a trial version of Eve Online. You made it through the tutorial, and now you’ve got yourself a few thousand ISKies, an agent’s recommendation and a noob ship. Now what?

Here’s a few things to do before you head to that next agent you’ve been told to go see.

1) Cruise around the map. I mean *really* cruise. It’s not like your spaceship needs gas. There’s nothing stopping you from wandering from region to region to get the lay of the land. This game is *huge*, and as long as you stay in high sec (0.5 or above), you probably won’t get your ass shot off by pirates. Pick some place 30 jumps out and just wander around - check out the markets in different places and see what’s selling, see what skills are available in different places. Get a feel for what you already learned in the tutorial. Check out the Eve Regions PDF for free, or spend a little cash and get the new shiny Strategic Map which even I don’t have yet, and bask in the envy of gamers everywhere.

2) Watch the chat screens. Check out the local chat in different places, and enjoy your pass in the new user zone. One of the cool things about Eve is the new user chat. After about 30 days or so, you get booted out of that chat, so enjoy it while you can, and read the transcript when *other* people ask stupid questions. Just lurk. You’ll learn a lot about the game. (Hell, it’s been so long since I got booted, I can’t even remember what that room is called.)

3) Check out some corporations. Some folks decide to fly solo for awhile - I know one guy who did it for almost a year - while others decide to join a corporation. Corps are great for newer players if you find the right one - they’ll answer your questions, loan you some cash, help you get into better ships and offer great gaming tips. If you find the wrong one, they’ll treat you like crap until you pass some sort of secret test, or they’ll make you their workhorse while they reap the profits. Do a little research, and keep your eyes open. Also, don’t forget to occasionally use your trusty Do No Evil Search Engine to research your corp. You’d be surprised how much info about in-game corps there are *outside* the game.

4) Make some cash. You need some cash so you can get out of that noob ship? Run some courier missions. Do a little digging in game and find yourself a distribution agent. Sure, you might have to go run one or two encounter missions and get your ass shot off, but overall you’ll mostly be running from place to place and make some cash without having to risk your ship. Beware of missions that ask you to go to low-sec or smuggle contraband. Those *never* work out, and you’ll find yourself podded into oblivion or broke. Keep in mind that courier missions don’t do much for your security ranking, but they will increase your faction status one tiny point at a time.

5) Submerse yourself in the Eve universe. Check out Eve Radio and the Eve Online Forums. Both have a ton of info (and cool music!), and you can find out a lot without having to speak up to folks you don’t know yet.
