Dr. Jeannine Mosely & The Mathematical Paper Arts
Last month, I saw a blurb in the IEEE Spectrum about Dr Jeannine Mosely and her Menger sponge made from over 66K business cards. Seems like a perfectly good application of an EE/CS PhD to me. (I’m kind of curious about the structural integrity of that thing.) What I *really* thought was cool, though, was this site that shows some interesting curved folds that Dr Mosely has done. Those boggle the mind, and I’d love to watch her make one of those curved model seedpods.
I’ve always been interested in fractals. With interesting applications such as the Menger sponge and the Mandelbrot set, fractals are fascinating, but I haven’t had the time to really research them.
I couldn’t find any video of Dr Mosely working on either project, but the Make/Craft folks posted some photos over on Flickr. Those photos give a *much* better idea of the size of the Menger sponge. That thing is huge.
If you’re in the Salem, MA area, or are willing to make the drive, Dr Mosely’s work will be on display for one more week (after a year long exhibit) at the Peabody Essex Museum.
Check it out!
