Buffy: The Official Conference On Slayage

Can’t believe I didn’t hear about this sooner.

Over in Arkansas at Henderson State University, the Slayage Conference on the Whedonverses is currently underway. Officially, it started last night, but the actual presentations are scheduled today through Sunday.

The topics defy description, but what I find most interesting is that most of the presenters are women, and there’s some serious analysis of gender politics as well as discussion of weird Whedonesque phenomena: impossible vampire pregnancies, etc.

What’s most interesting? That folks keep finding new things to say about these TV series that are all gone - “Firefly”, “Angel”, “BtVS”. I’m not sure why I find that surprising. Film analysis does the same thing with far less material - 2 hours being the average - and even “Firefly”, the shortest running series of the three, has over 25 hours of material to analyze ad nauseum.

Still, fun to think about. When I want to do this kind of analysis, I usually have to be drunk in a hotel lobby at a science fiction convention to get people to take me seriously.
