WisCon 32: The World’s Foremost Feminist Science Fiction Convention

I *thought* I knew what was going on in the world of science fiction, but exactly one thousand folks know more than I do.

From May 23 through 26, 2008, those thousand lucky souls will descend on WisCon at the Concourse Hotel in Madison, Wisconsin. As the self-described "first and foremost feminist science fiction convention in the world", WisCon will this year honor the authors Maureen McHugh and L. Timmel Duchamp . I’m currently reading McHugh’s "Half The Day Is Night" (and will have a review posted soon), but learned about Duchamp’s work from the convention site.

About WisCon: "WisCon encourages discussion, debate and extrapolation of ideas relating to feminism, gender, race and class. WisCon honors writers, editors and artists whose work explores these themes and whose voices have opened new dimensions and territory in these issues." This is the same WisCon where the James Tiptree Award was first announced, and where the ceremony for the 2008 recipients will be held this year.

Here’s the bad news: it’s too late to register, and there won’t be any tickets at the door. The good news, though, is that the website has a golden *ton* of information about feminist science fiction. Take a look at these two pages:

  • Past WisCons. Just cruising this list for authors names will add at *least* ten books to your reading list
  • their Links page, which will lead you to even more goodies

Make sure to sign up on their mailing list or Googlegroup so that you can get registered for next year.
