Why I Already Miss Battlestar Galactica

Three episodes left. Yup. Three.

I’ve managed to avoid most of the spoilers that get cranked out weekly over at io9.com, which is no easy feat. I haven’t visited the SciFi Channel’s page in weeks for fear of being teased out of my mind. Still, I cannot delay the inevitable: Battlestar Galactica, in its current incarnation, is nearly over. And I miss it already.

In recent weeks, it lost a bit of its shine. The third season, with the arcs on New Caprica and Baltar’s trial, was really good, and compared to the show of late, definitely of higher quality in terms of plot and character development. Now it seems as if the show’s writers and producers are too busy tying up loose ends and baiting us near to madness about who is the Final Cylon to explore anything new. It’s the messiest chess game in history as they move pieces around with no thought to placement or finesse in preparation for some spectacular endgame. In the process, I know they’ve lost a few viewers - I’ve spoken to folks who won’t watch anymore because they think it’s a big soap opera and I’m not sure that what remains is enough to entice folks to watch “Caprica”, or any other ventures they might have up their sleeves.

Which leaves us what? One of the things I’ve loved about this show is the fact that it was *great* science fiction. Great female characters - hell, great characters period, and great special effects. Do you think we’ll ever see anything like “You Can’t Go Home Again” on television in the near future? I don’t. I had great hopes for “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” but unless they start to give Sarah Connor a little bit more backbone, I don’t think it’s going to work. “The Bionic Woman” died on the vine, and I can’t say I was sorry to see it go; it couldn’t seem to define itself. “Doctor Who” and “Torchwood” are different kinds of shows, leaning more towards alien ickiness than space and gadgets. I will say that “Stargate: Atlantis” has improved over the last season, and I’m glad to see it, though it still has a ways to go before it catches up to “SG-1″.

Then again, perhaps the periods without that kind of science fiction make these shows that much more rewarding to watch when they are on the air: BSG, “Babylon 5″, “Stargate: SG-1″. I’ll catch up on my backup shows while I wait to see what the next amazing science fiction experience will be.

Don’t get me wrong, though. I’m *totally* sucked in, and will watch these last three episodes happily and curse anyone who dares to call me on June 13th at 10pm. (Don’t even bother. I’m turning off the phone and staying away from the internet so I don’t get the East Coast spoilers.)
