IEEE Spectrum, May 2008 Issue Available Online

I have an ongoing goal to get more women involved in the IEEE. With this goal in mind, I’d like to direct folks to take a look at the latest issue of the IEEE Spectrum.

The IEEE Spectrum is a monthly tech magazine, available to IEEE members in hard-copy, but available online for everyone. I opened the May 2008 issue expecting to have to dig to find content from women, but to my surprise, there were a couple of very interesting pieces by Sally Adee referenced in the first few pages:

  • “The Hunt for the Kill Switch”. This article discusses the possibility that some manufacturers are building secret “backdoors” in their military hardware chip code, which is of special concern when U.S. systems are built with a high number of chips from multiple manufacturers.
  • An interview with Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) Director Lisa Porter. The first director of IARPA discusses its task of “developing technologies so far out that not even the Defense Department would fund them”. In an age where innovation is expected from the private sector instead of the military-industrial complex, this is brow-raising indeed.

While these particular pieces specifically focus on military and defense applications, there’s no denying that those applications are often at the bleeding edge of development (even if they aren’t implemented until past their buy-by date).

The rest of the issue is just as informative and includes an interview with Gordon Moore. Yes, *that* Gordon Moore. Visit their site and give it a read. Then join the IEEE!
