How-To: LinuxChix Kernel Hacking Lessons

While I’ve done my share of rudimentary programming over the years - basic shell scripts, small number crunching programs, etc. - I’ve avoided the kind of hacking that *really* scores geek points. Specifically, I’ve never hacked a linux kernel, though it’s been on the "Zora List" for some time.

Mostly, I think I’ve been afraid of breaking something. Sometimes, fixing broken things in Linux can be more complicated than I thought (ah, the joy of library dependencies), and "breaking" the kernel can lead to a complete reinstall - not so keen if I’m behind on my backups. Of course, it never occurred to me to just hack at the kernel on some non-crucial system that I’ve got laying around the house - of which I have many.

So, the next step is to read and work through "LinuxChix Kernel Hacking Lessons" one step at a time and see where it gets me. I’ll post periodic updates on my progress.

The LinuxChix.org site is new to me, and I’m still surfing around to see what other cool things I can learn. Have you already hacked your kernel? Drop me a line at ubergeeke@dotfiveone.com and tell me about it. Share your experience with the rest of us!
