First post, and not a griefer in sight!

Welcome to the debut of .51 - Geekspace For Women!

Almost every day, I surf the web, and the first thing I do after checking my email is cruise the same half a dozen sites
, at times feeling unsatisfied. It has taken me a long time to figure out exactly what I’m looking for, and it wasn’t until I found myself browsing a bookstore and feeling the same dissatisfaction that I realized what was going on. I was scanning the technology titles, searching for information about women in tech, and I thought, that’s it. I’m looking for women like me.

I’m a geek. Actually, according to
everyone I know, I’m a big fat geek on several levels, and to some, this site is just the culmination of years of geekiness.

I’ve looked for a site that doesn’t seem to yet exist, so I’m creating it. Here on .51, I’ll be including:

  • interviews with women who consider themselves geeks in one way or another, and are doing amazing things
  • information about organizations of a technical nature for women
  • reviews of music produced by, created by, or featuring women
  • science fiction in its many forms - written, posted, on screen, on the web, etc.
  • information and opinions about gaming, HOWTOs, and computing
  • whatever I find geeky. (Admittedly, it’s a broad category, but it gives me a great deal of latitude.)

There are sites on the web that address the more political aspects of trying to get women more recognition in the many geek worlds. Though I certainly appreciate those sites, that’s not what I’m trying to do here. What if we already *had* the kind of equality that we deserve? What would we post about then? How about a site that talks about what women are already doing? Not only that, but a site that will give me what I *need* as well as what I want, one that balances my preferred forms of entertainment (games, books, movies) with those things that will help me expand technically (HOWTOs, documentation, organizations).

While the flow of this site may change in the coming weeks and months based on reader feedback, I’m excited to present what information I have so far.

At some later date, I’ll enable comments on this site. In the short term, however, I’m going to focus on content and more content instead of comment moderation, so please (please!) email your comments, questions, complaints, and ideas for possible posts or submissions to:

ubergeeke@dotfiveone.com

And most importantly, thanks for reading. Enjoy!
