CQ Inducts Trailblazing Women Into 2008 Amateur Radio Hall of Fame
In honor of last weekend’s Hamvention in Dayton, Ohio, I thought I’d better include a few tidbits about amateur “ham” radio.
CQ Magazine is one of only a few nationally distributed magazines that focus on Amateur Radio. Every year, the CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame “honors those individuals, whether licensed hams or not, who have made significant contributions to amateur radio; and those amateurs who have made significant contributions either to amateur radio, to their professional careers or to some other aspect of life on our planet.”
This year, CQ inducted nearly 20 people, including these women:
- Nellie Saltiel de Lazard, XE1CI, was the first female to operate from Palestine. She also earned a number of DXing awards, and operated from more than a dozen countries.
- Lenore Jensen, W6NAZ, Co-Founder, Young Ladies’ Radio League (YLRL). According to CQ, “After Pearl Harbor, she founded radio training courses for the American Women’s Voluntary Service (AWVS), specializing in phone patches between servicemen overseas and their families, running more than 50,000 phone patches during the Vietnam War.”
While you can visit their website to get some information about CQ magazine, your best bet is to actually find a hard copy from your local bookstore or newstand. (Believe me; it’s *far* more informative than their somewhat dated website.) It’s a great way to learn about amateur radio if you’re interested in taking up the hobby, or to keep up with events if you’re already involved.
