BSG: Galen Tyrol or Gaius Baltar, who will be the true Messiah?

First, let me just say that I won’t be posting any upcoming-episode spoilers on this site. I’m sure you could find another site that would give you your dose of daily spoiler, but I don’t want to know what’s going to happen so (1) don’t tell me, and (2) if someone *does* tell me, I won’t tell you.

Also, I’ll try to leave a lag of about a week so that folks have a chance to catch up on last week’s episode without having to try to dance around BSG posts. I do that all the time, lately, and it’s a tricky dance.

That said, if you’re *really* behind, read no further , because the time lag puts me at a crucial episode, “The Ties That Bind”.

While folks go on and on about who might be the Final Cylon (my money’s on Roslyn and against Starbuck), I’m much more interested in the subplots. Nevermind the eww-ness of Six and Tigh (oh, gods, really?) . WTF is up with Galen Tyrol? Recall his surprising religious leanings during that whole Eye of Jupiter arc. It leads me to thinking that he might be the religious opposite of Gaius Baltar’s “One True God” position. It’s a perfect dichotomy: Baltar believes himself perfect, but fears he’ll be held responsible for things he feels are outside of his control. Tyrol, on the other hand, is held in high esteem by almost everyone, but has never felt that he deserved that kind of respect - and that was *before* he found out he was a Cylon. He nearly beat Cally to death when he just thought it *might* be possible that he was one.

Ah, Cally.

Never liked her. Never, ever. Maybe for about five minutes in Season One before she got whiny and annoying, but I didn’t cry a tear for her when she visited “Roslyn’s Favorite Interrogation Room”. I have been getting a kick out of folks suddenly claiming to love her, though, which is why this Frakkin’ Toasters comic had me laughing hysterically.

Even though Tyrol has often been a side player, I sense a major shift coming in his character. He appears to think more about the big picture than the other three, probably because he’s doubted himself for so long. Of the Revealed Four, he seems most likely to blow his cover by letting his self-hatred destroy him - if Tigh doesn’t just kill him off first.

Time will tell. Drop me a line with your comments at ubergeeke@dotfiveone.com
